LAPLAND - IT'S FAR FROM GRIM UP NORTH

Winter in Lapland is breathtaking. Sometimes because of the cold, I admit, but in Lapland the cabins are warm and you won't be let out unless you're properly dressed. Even at the darkest time of year, the light is sheer magic. With the sun not even peeking above the horizon, sunrise blends into sunset painting the sky with the dreamiest pink and orange hues. And there are the moments where the landscape is cast in an eerie shade of blue. This is all before the northern lights even get a mention. If gawping at stunning landscapes in mesmering light isn't your thing, there are a billion and one things to do in the snow.

VARTIOSAARI - URBAN PARADISE Island, Helsinki

If you're in Helsinki on a long weekend, you HAVE to visit this little gem. The city wanted to build 5-7000 homes on this unspoilt paradise with no roads or streetlights, but thankfully for the time being it looks like it's saved. Only 7km as the crow flies from the city centre (but we're not crows, so we'll have to row over), setting foot on Vartiosaari is like stepping into a children's storybook. 

KARELIA - EAST IS EAST

And it's very different from the west. Bears, traditional folk music, surfing logs in rapids, next to Russia, weird sculpture parks. Karelia is definitely quirky and a place not be missed.
